Digital Detox Day 1: Laying out the Process

Today was day 1 of my Digital Detox journey and it's going great so far! I have checked my phone more often than I'd like to admit but it can only go up from here.

I'd like to first share why I'm doing this Digital Detox and how to got to where I am today. So, it took me a while to admit but I can tell I'm addicted to my phone based on my screen time. It is a hard thing to admit but I strongly believe that is the first step, recognizing there is a problem. I don't want my life to be controlled by my phone and I want to feel less attached to my screen. Last December, two of my friends that I met through bookstagram did the Digital Detox and they had such a great experience and I was inspired. This process is coined by author Cal Newport and his book 'Digital Minimalism' and I highly suggest buying the book if you're interested in this journey.

Next, I knew I wouldn't be successful these next 30 days if I didn't lay out some ground rules or goals for myself. Below is the Digital Detox Process from Cal Newport.

Digital Detox Process

1. Take a break from optional technologies for 30 days.

2. Explore and rediscover activities that you find meaningful and satisfying.

3. After the 30 day break, reintroduce optional technologies, starting from a blank slate.

This process intimiated me at first but I am eager to see how it changes me. To the left is the list I made to define my rules so I can be clear from the beginning as to what I can and can not do on the Digital Detox.

If you'd like to follow along with my journey, please subscribe to my book blog!

I'm also going to be using this blog going forward (along with bookstagram in 30 days) for my book reviews!

Thanks and happy reading,

Ashley
